Sump Pump Options
Sump pumps can prevent water from damaging your home and belongings. There are two different types of sump pumps available: pedestal and submersible.
Pedestal Sump Pump
This sump pump sits above the water level on a pedestal. The pump impeller is housed on the bottom of the pump, and a pipe extends from it down into the sump (the place where the excess water gathers). When the water in the sump rises too high, a float activates the switch on the sump pump to turn on the motor. The pump will drain away the water until the float returns to its original level.
Pedestal pumps have the advantage of being easy to access and therefore simpler to maintain and repair. They also suffer less damage since they don’t need to sit inside the water. However, they are much more conspicuous.
Submersible Sump Pump
As the name implies, this type of sump pump rests entirely submerged in the water of the sump. A submersible pump does not require a pipe, but instead draws the water directly into it. When the water drops below the intake on the pump, the pump motor will turn off.
Submersible pumps need special sealing so the water cannot interfere with their electrical system and short them out. They are visually much less obtrusive than pedestal sump pumps.
Professional Sump Pump Installation
The pump that will work best for you depends on how much flooding you regularly need to deal with. Plumbing experts can help you choose the pump type. Installing a sump pump requires more work than simply turning it on. You’ll need installers to attach the sump pump to an external reservoir of some kind, and the installers will create a sump that will move sufficient enough water down into it.
